Signal Symbol Sign

Signal Symbol Sign was an exhibition strand developed in response to the graphics, signage and visual language of Modern Painters, New Decorators’ former marketplace location in Carillon Court Shopping Centre. Drawing on shop signs, advertisements and everyday forms of display, it focused on making with and through language—bringing together words, symbols and images as materials in their own right. Influenced in part by the work and teaching of Corita Kent, the strand brought together artists working across painting, print and installation to explore colour, text and graphic form. Projects engaged with short phrases, proverbs and instructions—fragments of language that sit between guidance and interpretation—used as starting points for making. Across its exhibitions, Signal Symbol Sign emphasised process and combination, remixing and reworking visual language.
