Breaking Barriers:
Nicola Middler and Lucy Stevens
Considering how artists dream up ideas and make them a reality, our ‘Show & Tell’ talk series focuses on platforming artists and creatives from the local region who work nationally and internationally. Nicola Middler and Lucy Stevens joined us from Charnwood Arts and the Urban Forest: a community space bringing the essence of Charnwood Forest into Loughborough Town.
Nicola has worked for the Affordable Art Fair, trained as a primary school teacher, and produced and delivered arts festivals across the UK. Lucy is a multidisciplinary artist exploring our relationship with the natural environment. Her work interprets birdsong, museum collections and conservation data into mixed media abstract portraits on paper and sound works. Nicola spoke about creative methodology as problem-solving and an interest in communicating with people when approaching artworks. Breaking down barriers to art accessibility and opportunity, Nicola and Lucy discussed The Urban Forest as a way to engage the community with their local landscape through arts-based programming and a chance for creatives to collaborate, forming positive future relationships, opportunities and legacies.

The Good Life
'The Good Life' was an exhibition about utopia and townships, by members of Modern Painters, New Decorators. The starting points for this exhibition were two Costa Rican sayings. The phrase ‘Pura Vida’ which means the simple life or pure life and the saying ‘if you have a church, a bar, and a football pitch, then you have a town’, which is a simple metaphor for life, and has also been suggested to be the constitute elements of each town or community.
