In only 10 months, they have achieved an enormous amount of output and consolidated their place in the Loughborough arts ecosystem. Through the evaluation process, it is clear that their work has great strength and is best understood through three themes of community, access and inclusion, and artistic excellence. “There is such camaraderie around the space, even the studio holders and the people who are participating. It is clear that MPND have an important role to play in Loughborough and is one of the only spaces in the town presenting audiences with contemporary art and newly commissioned work. The work MPND has done with artists and young people has had a lasting impact on those who have been involved in the programme. We opened our new venue on Aumberry Gap on Saturday, 6th September 2025. Previously, we were based in Carillon Court. The space includes an art gallery, shop, project space, and studios for artists. As part of our exciting programme, we re-launched our Art Club: a creative workshop series for young people aged 11–16. Art Club offers participants the chance to develop artistic skills, engage with contemporary art, and explore a broad range of creative practices. At Art Club, we: → Engage with gallery exhibitions → Meet and work with contemporary artists → Explore a range of art processes, techniques and creative ideas → Explore transferable skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, resilience and social &amp; cultural literacy → Have fun! Over our first year in the new venue, we have opened a new home for contemporary art in the town, welcomed new audiences, supported artists, created opportunities for children and young people, and built a space where people can meet, make and spend time together. Following unsuccessful funding applications to Arts Council England and Charnwood Borough Council, we are currently unable to continue operating in the same way. For at least the rest of 2026, we will not be delivering our regular MPND-curated programme of exhibitions, workshops and public events while we reapply for funding and work out what is possible. This is a significant obstacle, but it is not the end of MPND. We are not closing or disappearing. Our studioholders will continue to work from the building, and the site will remain active through occasional exhibitions, events, fundraising activity and future hires of our Gallery and Project Space. This situation reflects the reality faced by many small, independent and artist-led organisations working within an increasingly competitive funding system. Public funding enables organisations like ours to provide free cultural activity, pay artists and arts workers fairly, work with communities who may otherwise face barriers to taking part, and support creative work that cannot be sustained through commercial income alone. We are working hard to protect what has been built at Aumberry Gap and develop a sustainable next phase for MPND. I ended up gaining more than I expected.” I’ve done many new things this year, like facilitating workshops with the public, safeguarding training, installing shows and working behind the scenes in the gallery. Outside of the gallery, I’ve also been able to experience being part of a community and team of professional artists who have shared their knowledge with me and helped me to grow as an artist. The support and community feel of working at Modern Painters, New Decorators has helped me through my residency. I’ve achieved things I probably wouldn’t have had I not been part of this team. I feel much more prepared to leave the university bubble and pursue a career in the arts after the experience and confidence I’ve gained at Modern Painters, New Decorators! I feel more sure of my skills as an artist and have confidence in myself to do things I wouldn’t have even considered last year. My favourite part of volunteering has been improving my workshop, facilitating and installation/DIY skills, which have benefitted me in my practice. Being involved in developing ‘Our Common Mercies’ made me appreciate having creative support and conversations outside of the university and allowed me to expand my understanding of possibilities post-degree.
