Folk Threads: Creative Communities For Climate Futures

Modern Painters, New Decorators is an artist-led organisation creating collaborative visual arts programmes rooted in placemaking. From our new purpose-built venue in Aumberry Gap, Loughborough, we support artists and local residents to imagine cultural futures together through exhibitions, workshops, research and events. Our work champions underrepresented voices, fosters creative progression for young people and families, and builds long-term cultural infrastructure for the town.

	The Grand Opening

The Grand Opening of our new venue marked a major milestone for Modern Painters, New Decorators — a public celebration of accessible, community-centred arts in Loughborough. Through exhibitions, shared activity and a daytime launch gathering, we opened the doors to a purpose-built space shaped by local consultation and creative ambition. The event introduced
our first programme in the new building, inviting visitors, partners and neighbours to collectively imagine what this site can become.

Jessica Ashman:Chimera IslandChimera Island, a solo exhibition by Jessica Ashman, inaugurated our new venue with a vivid exploration of landscape, belonging and ancestral memory. Through textiles, animation, sound and natural dyeing, Ashman reimagined rural and ecological spaces as sites of resistance and reconnection. Drawing from local histories, Caribbean heritage and global colonial legacies, Chimera Island constructed a speculative refuge — a hybrid island shaped by myth, research and personal archive, inviting visitors to consider how place might be re-envisioned beyond empire.

Studio at 17:
Greatest HitsGreatest Hits brought together eleven artists from Studio at 17 to celebrate more than three decades of inclusive, community-driven creativity in Loughborough. Presented as part of our Grand Opening, the exhibition showcased standout works from across the group’s varied practices — from printmaking and collage to video and intimate drawings — reflecting the shared energy and peer support that defines Studio at 17. Formerly known as Albert Street Artists, the group has supported artists with lived experience of long-term mental ill health for over 30 years. Tangent Gallery, their public-facing space, sits alongside their active studio environment.

	Janhavi Sharma:
My Molten SkyMy Molten Sky, a solo exhibition by Janhavi Sharma, explored how stories of place, memory and loss were formed, fragmented and remade. Through black-and-white photography and sculptural installation, Sharma developed a quiet, radical approach to storytelling, holding space for uncertainty and allowing meaning to shift rather than settle. Drawing on folklore, repetition and performative retelling, the exhibition constructed a loose, location-less mythology where images drifted between remembering and forgetting.

	Issie Martin:
Futile ActsFutile Acts, a solo exhibition by Issie Martin, explored our relationship to water, the body and the limits of control in the face of the climate crisis. Through moving image, drawing and print, Martin developed a series of poetic, impossible gestures—mopping the sea, tracing coastlines by hand, attempting to contain water in dissolvable vessels—reflecting on the futility of resisting rising tides. Drawing on hydrofeminist thinking and mythologies of repetition, the exhibition connected personal experience with wider ecological conditions, bringing the body and landscape into porous relation.

	Phil Root:
Flat EarthFlat Earth, a solo exhibition by Phil Root, presented new ceramic works that explored the limits of traditional processes through experimental casting, glazing and firing. Working with foraged and industrial materials—including unprocessed clay, wood ash and brick dust—Root developed a process-led, site-responsive approach, allowing materials to shape themselves through heat, pressure and time. Drawing on references from medieval tilework to contemporary urban surfaces, the exhibition brought together works that recorded their own transformation, from asphalt casts to ash-glazed panels. Root’s use of a self-built kiln introduced further unpredictability, positioning material change, collaboration and alchemic process at the centre of the work.

	Jamie Seymour:
The Sick RoseThe Sick Rose, a solo exhibition by Jamie Seymour, brought together paintings, drawings and sculptural assemblages exploring queer anxiety, visibility and control. Taking its title from William Blake’s poem, the exhibition drew on symbolic language—roses, swans and watchful eyes—to reflect experiences of being seen, surveilled and made vulnerable. Combining cartoon-like forms with found materials, glitter, oil paint and debris, Seymour developed a tactile, lyrical visual world where tenderness and unease coexisted. Moving between personal narrative and wider cultural reference, The Sick Rose examined how identity is shaped through pressure, projection and the persistent negotiation between exposure and self-definition.

		<description>Art Club
Modern Painters, New Decorators is an arts organisation based in Loughborough. We opened our new venue on Aumberry Gap on Saturday, 6th September 2025. Previously, we were based in Carillon Court. The space includes an art gallery, shop, project space, and studios for artists. As part of our exciting programme, we re-launched our Art Club: a creative workshop series for young people aged 11–16. Art Club offers participants the chance to develop artistic skills, engage with contemporary art, and explore a broad range of creative practices.

	At Art Club, we:

	→ Engage with gallery exhibitions
→ Meet and work with contemporary artists
→ Explore a range of art processes, techniques and creative ideas
→ Explore transferable skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, resilience and social &#38;amp; cultural literacy
→ Have fun!

Sessions are free to attend. Refreshments are provided, and we can support some travel expenses if required. Sessions run weekly, and members are expected to commit to attending the full block. We work with referral partners for most places on our Art Club programme, but we’re now accepting open applications for a limited number of spaces — allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. We’d love to hear from young artists and creatives who want to be part of something inspiring!

Modern Painters, New Decorators is made up of artists, makers, and community organisers who together shape how our organisation runs and evolves. As an artist-led organisation, our team are practising artists who develop projects, curate exhibitions, and support others to sustain their creative work. Our members, studioholders, team, and management committee form an active network — growing an ecology of ideas, skills, and opportunities that help artists to develop, connect, and share their work. 	&#38;nbsp;Expanding ambition&#38;nbsp;

In 2025, we opened the doors to a new public arts venue on Aumberry Gap in Loughborough, near Pinfold Gate, after seven years at Carillon Court Shopping Centre. The project was started in 2017 by artists and makers with a connection to the town.
An exciting opportunity came up for Modern Painters, New Decorators to relocate and expand. The new arts venue now includes a public gallery and learning space, artist studios, community kitchen and pop-up cafe.

“I feel like I have a greater understanding of what it means to work in an artist-led organisation and how important MPND is to the community.”
Volunteering at MPND for the last 12 months has been a great experience and has given me so many opportunities to meet and network with artists, and support with different types of events and workshops, leaving me with additional skills that I can take forward and explore further. I would highly recommend getting involved in the programme.

“I applied to volunteer with Modern Painters, New Decorators during my graduate artist residency year to gain some real-life experience and skills in working in the arts. I ended up gaining more than I expected.”
I’ve done many new things this year, like facilitating workshops with the public, safeguarding training, installing shows and working behind the scenes in the gallery. Outside of the gallery, I’ve also been able to experience being part of a community and team of professional artists who have shared their knowledge with me and helped me to grow as an artist. The support and community feel of working at Modern Painters, New Decorators has helped me through my residency. I’ve achieved things I probably wouldn’t have had I not been part of this team. I feel much more prepared to leave the university bubble and pursue a career in the arts after the experience and confidence I’ve gained at Modern Painters, New Decorators! I feel more sure of my skills as an artist and have confidence in myself to do things I wouldn’t have even considered last year. My favourite part of volunteering has been improving my workshop, facilitating and installation/DIY skills, which have benefitted me in my practice. In short, I’ve loved my time here, and I’m sad it’s time to leave!

“Every time I come in, it’s a surprise what I’ll be doing - painting and wallpapering, planning sessions or making together. I’ve learnt more skills than I could have imagined when I applied or through studying!”
I’ve had the loveliest time volunteering for Modern Painters, New Decorators! Starting just over a year ago (in the first year of my degree), helping with the Family Workshops and Art Club, my confidence in leading activities and contributing to conversations surrounding the exhibitions/programme has grown so much. Being involved in developing ‘Our Common Mercies’ made me appreciate having creative support and conversations outside of the university and allowed me to expand my understanding of possibilities post-degree. Collaborating with the team and exhibiting my work within Loughborough has been so fulfilling - often leaving a day of volunteering with a massive grin - I couldn’t recommend it more and will miss this so much!
