Copy Out A New Shoot
Joanne Masding
22 January - 5 March 2022
Joanne Masding is an artist based in Birmingham who makes sculptural work from clay, plaster, plastics, metal, text and images. 'Copy Out A New Shoot' is an exhibition of new work by Joanne and the first exhibition in 'Archive Fever', our new programme for 2022. 'Archive Fever' is a four-part project about collecting and collections hosted by Modern Painters, New Decorators, funded by Arts Council England and produced in partnership with Leicestershire Museums Collection.

The exhibition takes a variety of botanical artefacts to think about production and reproduction as its starting point. Joanne has made sculptural works in ceramic, wax and plastics using casting, copying, rewriting, and remaking processes. Honing in on artefacts designed to teach, describe or demonstrate, the works in the exhibition focus on making something new and how we understand new things.

'Archive Fever' consists of four solo visual art exhibitions alongside a programme of creative workshops for visitors and young people. Joanne Masding, Jagjit Kaur, Dan Cowlam and Katie Schwab will each produce new work in response to the items held in the Leicestershire Museums Collection. The artists will select objects and reproductions from the Collection alongside the new artwork. The Collection features items relating to the county's history, including; Victorian costume, 1970s Action Man and Neolithic stone axes.
